New York City is the city that never sleeps, especially during the months leading up to a major treadmill marathon. This means that you’ll be competing in an event that doesn’t allow participants to take much sleep between events. But, if you are a runner that truly wants to win the New York half marathon, you have to do what it takes to win.
A half marathon will always start in Central Park. Once you reach the midpoint of the course, you will pass by the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, and the world famous Grand Central Terminal. Each of these locations has something unique to offer runners in this race. So, in order to finish your race on time, you need to spend some time looking at your map and looking for the ideal viewing locations.
As a big fan of New York City and New York history, I can tell you that the Empire State Building is a fantastic spot to begin a marathon! As a matter of fact, it’s my personal favorite. The Empire State Building is also known as one of the most historically significant buildings in the country.
In addition to the Empire State Building, you’ll also pass by the giant Central Park Zoo and the Grand Central Terminal. All three of these areas have been used by Olympic athletes, so they will definitely give your runner a unique experience when you run through them. Look for trail markers that may lead you by the open areas where you can enjoy your view of New York City from atop the roof of the Empire State Building.
Another venue you want to be looking for is the Grand Central Parking Lot. As a matter of fact, many runners take a quick break and visit this parking lot after passing through the Grand Central Station. You can get some great photos with your camera in hand, and you will have the chance to be close to your finisher’s medal. As you head towards the finish line, you will find the World Trade Center. As a runner, you don’t want to pass any other landmarks, especially since you’ve already seen the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, and the Grand Central Station! Therefore, you will need to check each area carefully for where to turn around to head back towards the finish line.
Many runners choose to head through Central Park because of the views it offers when you start and finish the New York half marathon. This is the most scenic route you will come across, but the other options all have advantages. You should pick the route that best suits your needs, but remember that you will also want to be able to manage your breathing during the race.

If you have access to the subway, it will make your life easier. That way, you will be able to move faster than on foot, and you won’t have to worry about standing for too long or talking on your phone. It’s also a good idea to have access to a nice water bottle, so you can rehydrate your body immediately after your race.
As you gear up to start the race, be sure to have a GPS on your wrist. This will make it easier to keep track of your pace and to start and stop when necessary. Also, make sure you are wearing a watch that is easy to read because you will be running and moving at different speeds.
When you start the race, be sure to breathe deeply and run only when your heart rate reaches a comfortable level. Your body will thank you later! After about ten minutes of running, you will want to stop, which is when you should refill your water bottle with fresh water or juice or take a sip of Gatorade to refresh yourself.
About one hour into your final run, you should stop at the first aid station and refill your water bottle. I recommend eating an apple or a lemon. If you prefer something more healthful, there are numerous energy bars, sports drinks, and other foods that will help you through your marathon.
Of course, there are still certain things you should not do to enjoy your New York half marathon. I highly recommend you avoid smoking, eating chocolate, and drinking alcohol.
